Liking these, but again not sure about the pencil (is it pencil?) colouring. Could you try stamping it? Or stenciling? Black paper (could still be translucent, like tissue paper?) Have a look at the Peter Carey book covers Jenny Grigg did using torn paper (second set here: http://www.jennygrigg.com/book_covers1.html) Maybe think about using paper or collage in a simiar way?
